(1924) Die Nibelungen

Based on an epic poem from the Middle Ages, this Fritz Lang-directed, two-part fantasy film series is a technical marvel for its time and has proved enormously influential over the last century. An unconquerable warrior lusts for a beautiful princess and must win her brother, the king’s, approval by riding off with him to battle an old foe. All of the expected fantasy tropes are explored with visual and dramatic virtuosity over the nearly 2 and a half our epic run time.

(1924) The City Without Jews

In a devastatingly prophetic vision of the terror and evil that would pervade Europe in the coming decades, Hans Karl Breslauer’s The City Without Jews foretells the story of an antisemetic tyrant who condemns all Jews to leave the country. Based on novel by Hugo Bettauer, the film adaptation’s incendiary message caused such anger and contempt that the author was demonized as a ‘Red’ and eventually shot and killed by a member of the Nazi Party.
