In the 80’s, the USSR… was in shambles. With Western influences seeping in, the nation was in chaos with a great uncertainty of the nation’s future in question, producing a thick dread that hung over the land. It was during this time that his fear manifested into 12 horror films that captured the growing unrest & defied Stalin’s hatred for horror movies; The Fear Before The Fall.
In the USSR the country may have been in turmoil, but the West, between the Video Nastys of the UK & the growing movement of practical VFX in cult classics like “The Thing”, an explosion of new horror was taking shape in the hands of artists like Tom Savini and young prodigy Rick Baker. With the midnight movies & grindhouse theaters in the rearview, these masters of horror were giving a physical jolt to a dead genre. Enter The Curse Of Snake Valley, one of the Soviet’s sleaziest horror sleepers of the 80’s. Another co-production with Poland, this oddity oozed with strangeness associated with Western sensibilities, fusing together the archaeological adventures of Indiana Jones & the disgusting creature features of John Carpenter to create a creepy (and confusing) anti-colonialist fable about of a haunted ancient relic found in the jungle that turns those in possession of it into unspeakable Lovecraftian mutants from beyond!
